Delightful and ambitious, Togetherness, is an uncomfortable conversation about the realities of married life, long after the honeymoon is over. Anyone who has been in a long term relationship, married or not, can relate to the stagnant routines that inevitably develop. Created by Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass and Steve Zissis, Togetherness revels in the comical destruction of the human ego and celebrates all of life's victories, small and smaller.

togethernessoncouchMarried for a decade with two small children, Brett (played by Mark Duplass) and Michelle Pierson (played by Melanie Lynskey) are living the L.A. suburban dream. There’s only one problem: they’re desperate for change and have no idea how to go about figuring it out. When Brett’s best friend and out of work actor from back home, Alex Pappas (played by Steve Zissis), is evicted yet again from his apartment, Brett convinces him to stay with him until he gets back on his feet. Though it’s a real tug of war to even convince Alex to stay, Brett’s insistence that he should because he can make a go of this acting thing, feels more like Brett wanting Alex to stay for reasons that are wholly more selfish. Of all of them, the layers of his un-happiness seem the slowest to fall away.  friends

Making the living space even smaller, is Michelle’s desperate, free-spirited, middle aged sister, Tina (played by Amanda Peet), who was visiting from Houston and now wants to move to L.A. Even though she’s got her own trousseau of baggage, somehow she’s exactly what Alex needs to get motivated and begin to fight for his life.

So there you have it, four people stuffed into a small house, forcing one another to face their issues one comically uncomfortable moment at a time. This show is billed as a comedy, which it definitely is, but it’s also charged with a lot of heart and deep emotional angst I think most people can relate to. There are a lot of lemonade moments that don’t come off as hokey but rather they play as awesomely inspired and very true. Only two episodes remaining in this first season. I can’t wait to see how the consequences play out for this very desperate foursome.
